Dear Deborah,
I heard you speak with Jeff this evening (www.thejefffariasshow.com), and thought it was great. Our youth desperately need books like yours, to counter all the establishment media crap that attempts to distract, disempower and demoralize them. I read more about your book on Amazon, and added it to a resource list I created there http://www.amazon.com/Progressive-Arizona/lm/R31VWI1PXBYUKG/ref=cm_lmt_dtpa_f_1_rdssss2?pf_rd_p=253462201&pf_rd_s=listmania-center&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0595442676&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=07VKV9DAEZYB1YVMYNGX Geez, what cumbersome link. I hope it works. Anyway, I also bought your book for the daughter of a friend of mine.
Kind regards, Preston

"Fashion Fighter" by Deborah O'Dowd is a story about a seven-year-old girl named Kylie, who lives in Tucson, Arizona. In this book, Kylie learns to follow her heart. At first, Kylie thinks the dad she has been living with is her real dad. Then her mom tells her that she is not living with her real dad. Her real dad lost his legs in Iraq! Then she found out that children were dying in Iraq! So she and her classmates started a protest called Swirl Against Death. But then Kylie has another challenge; her real dad's wife is very mean to Kylie!
My favorite things about this book are: when Kylie and her classmates make up Swirl Against Death, and when Kylie stops her dad, one of her teachers, and one of her principals from being suspended.
This book was funny and great. The author did a wonderful job writing this book! I learned to stand up when someone is hurting you and to do what one thinks is right! I would rewrite the first chapter to make it more interesting by putting more action in it. I would also call Kylie "fashion fighter" more often because she was barely ever called "fashion fighter!"
"Fashion Fighter" by Deborah O'Dowd is a children's novel but I would probably recommend it for 9 to 12-year-olds, but I do think every one should read about Kylie
The Issue Wonk Praises Fashion Fighter
By: Deborah O'Dowd
If you have children in your lives, you need this book. It’s a story about a very feisty little girl who learns about the effects of war and the responsibilities of citizens in creating it. She learns about political activism and fighting for what’s right. Adults will learn a lot from this story and children are introduced to their up-coming responsibilities in the world. Interwoven are other issues that children today cope with, like blended families. At the back there’s a glossary of terms to discuss with kids and writing instruction to help children learn to write. The brilliant author has produced an important tool for parents in educating their children beyond the A,B,Cs. She clearly has an uncanny insight into a child’s view of the world. I hope we see more from Deborah O'Dowd.

You will root for Cheeks!
Dear Tucson,
Fashion Fighter is set in the West University of Arizona neighborhood, a block away from "Cheek's" elementary school (a dual-language English/Spanish school). As a third generation Tucson High School graduate, this setting was important to me. I miss the Fourth Avenue Street Fair, Downtown Saturday Night, the Tucson Weekly newspaper, Time Market (and Baggins!) I miss teaching at Pueblo High School, Himmel Park, Michas and lifeguarding. I miss my family. I wrote this book as a 'love letter' for home.
I miss you,
Debbie
